How Files Enter Your Organization and How to Secure Them

Summary

Every file entering an organization is a potential threat, regardless of how it arrives. Email attachments, web uploads, USB devices, cloud storage syncs, and cross-domain transfers are all file entry points that attackers use to deliver malware, exfiltrate data, or compromise critical systems. In this 17-minute conversation, Irfan Shakeel (VP, Training and Certification Services) and Abrielle Land (Solution Engineer) walk through the most common and most overlooked file entry points from real customer experience.

The discussion explores what makes files dangerous beyond traditional malware: weaponized macros, embedded scripts, active content, hidden metadata, and files that disguise their true type. These threats bypass conventional antivirus because they exploit legitimate features of file formats rather than known malware signatures.

The episode covers how the OPSWAT MetaDefender platform addresses each entry channel. OPSWAT Metascan Multiscanning detects known and unknown threats using 30+ anti-malware engines. OPSWAT Deep CDR (Content Disarm and Reconstruction) sanitizes files by stripping active content and rebuilding them clean. OPSWAT Proactive DLP detects and redacts sensitive data before files leave the organization. Adaptive Sandbox provides behavioral analysis for zero-day threats. Together, these technologies deploy at email gateways, web proxies, USB kiosks, cloud storage connectors, and cross-domain transfer systems to provide complete file-based threat prevention.

So I've been a solution engineer here at OPSWAT for give or take around two years now. I have a lot of roles and responsibilities. The majority of my focus, though, really is helping our customers figure out solutions to their use cases and problems to solve.
00:44And I work with customers from a variety of industries, all the way from nuclear startups to credit unions. So my day to day does change quite frequently. That sounds good because we are going to talk about the security situation of various sizes and types of organizations. So let's talk. What are the things that keep security teams up all night long?
